Athlete Spotlight: Zach’s Winning Formula

Zach joined our pitching remote program a little over three months ago, bringing with him a solid frame and an exceptional work ethic. His primary goal was to enhance his command and consistency on the mound. During his initial assessment, we identified some mechanical limitations that needed attention in his first training phase.

Zach's Pitching Metrics:

Initial Metrics:

  • Mound Velocity: 81.7 mph

  • Command Grade: 3 out of 10

Current Results:

  • Max Pulldown Velocity: 86.4 mph (+4.7 mph)

  • Command Grade: 7 out of 10 (+4)

Zach's remarkable improvement can be attributed to his consistent efforts in both the weight room and on the pitcher's mound. Our approach began by addressing his pitching mechanics to establish a sound and repeatable delivery. Subsequently, we focused on command work using our differential command program. Considering Zach's dual commitment as a competitive swimmer in-season, we carefully managed his workload.

Addressing Pitching Mechanics:

Following the initial assessment, we identified limitations in Zach's pitching delivery, including the need for a better initial drift phase, maintaining stacked weight while moving down the mound, and keeping his rear foot connected into front foot strike. To address these issues, we incorporated the following drill set:

  • Step Back

  • Janitor Throws

  • Walking Wind Ups

Command Development:

For command improvement, we implemented a 12-week differential command program, utilizing different ball weights, sizes, and mound distances. Zach progressed from using a normal baseball at 46ft to throwing fully random overload and underload balls, as well as oversize and undersize balls, from a mound distance of 54ft. This resulted in a noticeable improvement in command, evident in both testing and live at-bat performances.

Weight Room Training:

While Zach was already committed to the weight room, he realized the benefits of a professionally developed plan. Considering his workload as a competitive swimmer in-season, we tailored a plan to ensure progress and adequate recovery. Zach's physicality has notably advanced over the last three months.

Through this tailored approach, Zach has transformed from a player eyeing the high school JV team to one poised for a breakout year on the varsity team. His dedication positions him for potential recruiting calls starting August 1st of his junior year. Zach's success is a testament to his hard work, daily consistency in training, active participation in check-in calls, and commitment to quality coaching.

Hear what Zach’s mother, Nicole, and Zach himself have to say about his experience training with us:

"Ashton offers a highly personalized approach to training. Evaluations before Zach began training were comprehensive, and Ashton took the time to address concerns and questions. We never felt rushed or as if what we were asking was unimportant. A specific workout, as well as pitching exercises, were designed to help address the areas Zach wanted to work on. Throughout Zach’s training, Ashton has stayed in contact with us and has reassessed and adjusted the program as needed. Ashton is excellent at communication and has really connected with Zach. He cares about Zach, as evidenced by touching base with him and with me when Ashton senses that Zach was frustrated following sessions. As a former player himself, he draws upon his own experiences and makes connections that are honest. He is extremely responsive and knowledgeable and has been a tremendous resource to our family. I have seen real progress in Zach’s pitching since he began working with Ashton. His command has improved as well as his velocity. I have also seen personal growth in Zach, specifically, an improved work ethic and a sense of ownership in the things that are improving, as well as improved time management skills."

“I’ve really enjoyed my time working with Ashton, and he is very accommodating to my needs. He is very knowledgeable about the game and can communicate with me effectively. Whether working on mechanics, pitch design, he is always sure to explain the why behind everything. It’s never just 'do this,' it’s always 'here is why this works and how it will benefit you.' Ashton is able to use his own experience in the game and the struggles that he had to relate with me and help me overcome similar struggles myself. Since starting in October, my fastball has gone from 81 to 86 with significantly better command. My body weight has also improved from 180 to 192, with all of my numbers trending upwards.”
