Athlete Spotlight: The Evolution of Peyton Mason

Introduction

In this athlete spotlight, we examine Peyton Mason’s remarkable evolution from a novice golfer

to a standout figure in the competitive golf landscape. This high school sophomore’s story is a

compelling narrative of grit, strategic training, and significant achievement.

Peyton’s Phenomenal Progress

Peyton’s journey in golf, beginning in the summer of 2021, initially showcased modest

capabilities. However, his transformation has been nothing short of extraordinary. He

progressed from struggling with distance to consistently outperforming peers and making his

mark in local competitions.

A look at his key metrics:

- Initial vs. Current Driver Club Head Speed: 105 mph to 124 mph (19mph increase)

- Improvement in Career Best Round: 74 to 70 (4 stroke decrease)

- Handicap Reduction: 5 to 1.5 (3.5 stroke decrease)

Remarkably, Peyton’s current club head speed would place him in the top five on the PGA

Tour, as just a high school Sophomore.

Training Regimen and Approach

Under the guidance of his trainer Ashton King, Peyton embarked on a journey to correct

movement inefficiencies, focusing on mobility for an effective golf swing and safe, weight

training. The first six months were dedicated to mastering foundational weight room exercises,

such as squatting, hinging, pushing, and pulling. Ashton and Peyton also worked closely with

Peyton’s swing coach, Steve Prater. This ensured that the identified mobility limitations were

corrected to improve his golf swing under Steve’s guidance.

As Peyton’s mobility and technique improved, his training intensified, incorporating advanced

strength and power training. Notably, Peyton’s achievements in the weight room - deadlifting

over 300 pounds and front squatting over 200 - underscore his commitment and physical

prowess. In addition to more advanced weightlifting exercises, Peyton also began a weekly

Super Speed Golf training program. With the goal of improving his club head speed to 130mph

by the end of the off season. Which would rank him first on the PGA Tour.
