Athlete Spotlight: Cameron Sharp Just Keeps Getting Better
Cameron joined our program already as one of the premier golfers on the east coast for his class. Racking up wins in some of the largest junior golf events in the country. However, his father Brian, an accomplished golfer and coach himself and Cameron shared the vision that if Cameron could improve his driving distance and club head speed his performance will continue to improve. Over his first few months of training Cameron has done just that, leading to a second place finish at the largest 4 ball event in the state.
Cameron’s Metrics:
Initial Metrics:
Club Head Speed: 111 mph
Ball Speed: 166 mph
Driver Carry: 283 yards
Current Results:
Club Head Speed: 116 mph (+5 mph)
Ball Speed: 173 mph (+7 mph)
Driver Carry: 295 yards (+12 yards)
In just 2 short months of training Cameron has already seen major improvements in both his club head speed and ball speed. Leading to further drives on the course, and ultimatley lower scores.
Addressing Movement Limitations:
During Camerons initial assessment we identified some limitations in both his TPI screen and movement screen. However, after discussing with Cameron, Brain, and his swing coach it didn’t seem that any of the TPI limitations were leading to swing limitations on the golf course. So we chose to address the movement patterns in the weight room, while prescribing mobility to clean up the TPI screen. This will allow Cameron to move better, and built the necessary work capacity to continue to train hard, and perform on the course.
During his initial month of training we focused on a introductory weight room program. The program that we like to use is the 1x20 protocol that is tailored to meet our athlete’s needs. With this approach we are able to introduce new weight room exercises at a high volume to build the necessary skill to preform them effectively. Cameron responded extremely well to the training and his movement patterns improved rapidly, allowing us to move into an introductory strength block during his next month of training.
In his second month of training Cameron preformed exercises such as front squat, barbell RDL’s, and weighted push ups. These patterns allow us to build the necessary strength, while keeping Cameron safe, and moving well. We also have introduced more advanced medicine ball, and plyometric work to his training routine. During the month of training Cameron has already improved his front squat by over 40 pounds. He has done this while still hitting full depth, and without losing any mobility in his hips, and ankles.
As we continue to progress Cameron, he will continue to build strength in the basic weight room exercises, while progressing his medicine ball and plyometric work. I expect Cameron to continue to improve driving distance, and continue to be a force on the junior golf circut in the coming years.
